M1 Abrams Battle of 73 Easting, Gulf War 1991
Innovation and imagination blossom in the age of sustainability
At first blush, the scenario seems surreal, counter-intuitive and altogether impossible. A 70-ton U.S. Army M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank crossing a bridge constructed entirely of composite plastic seems both sheer folly and a recipe for disaster.
The reality is, unlikely though it seems, the world's first such bridge exists at Fort Bragg, NC and the M1 first rolled over it during a demonstration last summer. The bridge built of material developed by Axion International of New Providence, NJ flexed as designed and returned to its original position after the tank crossed. The long-term implications and applications of such technology seem boundless.
Proprietary technology developed in consort with scientists from Rutgers University is applied to non-biodegradable items such as milk jugs, electronics housing and shampoo bottles that usually wind up choking landfills. The process involves blending the plastics, melting them in an extruder and molding functional building shapes. The result is an inert, thermoplastic material that is structurally stronger than other non-structural plastic lumber.
"By taking plastic that would otherwise wind up in landfills and recycling it into next-generation building materials, Axion is helping to save the environment while creating infrastructure products for bridges that are strong enough to drive a tank over," proclaims Axion CEO James Kerstein on the corporate website.
The product resists rot and corrosion, resulting in significant maintenance savings, and is both 100 percent recycled and 100 percent infrastructure-ready. Though not yet code listed by the International Code Council (ICC), the thermoplastics have undergone testing by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and can replace wood, steel and concrete in bridge structures. Fort Bragg's bridge has a 73-ton rating for tracked vehicles, like tanks, and an 88-ton rating for wheeled vehicles.
The product is lab and field tested by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, military purchasing departments, Rutgers, the University of Illinois and the American Association of Railroading Test Track. Axion's technology has already resulted in the installation of more than 200,000 railroad crossties across the United States and can also be used for marine pilings.
ENGINEERED CEMENTITIOUS COMPOSITE Development of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) – bendable concrete with self-healing properties – has come in response to concrete's brittleness, lack of durability and failure under strain. Initially used to enhance the safety of buildings in active seismic zones, ECC has applications across the design spectrum.
At the forefront of research is Dr. Victor C. Li,the E. Benjamin Wylie Collegiate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, whose work dates back to 1990. He delivered keynote addresses on ECC at conferences in South Africa last November and Chicago last June.
"Because ECC maintains all the advantageous properties of normal concrete, but also incorporates metal-like ductility and self-healing functionality, the range of applications can be greatly expanded too much beyond what concrete has traditionally been used for," says Dr. Li, also a senior partner in a small consulting company (LFL & Associates) working to bring the technology to market. "The technology is ripe for a variety of commercial applications and some government agencies can help accelerate the process."
Under the watchful eye of the Michigan Department of Transportation, ECC was tested on a patch repair of a bridge deck in Ann Arbor in 2002 and a link-slab for a bridge deck in Ypsilanti in 2005. A 60-story residential tower completed in Osaka, Japan in 2008 used ECC in the coupling beams throughout the building's core.
OTHER PRODUCTS OF NOTE Paint based on the human skin's healing abilities is being developed by researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart, Germany together with colleagues from Duisburg-EssenUniversity. Researchers there are working to perfect electroplated layers with embedded nano-capsules filled with liquid that ruptures when a scratch occurs to spill healing agents into the damaged area.

Well, the previous family of tanks , the "Patton" (M47,M48, M60) Series, served the US Army and Marines since the 70s until the M1 replaced it in the inventory.
THe advantages of the Abrams over the Patton was the use of a gas turbine engine, advance laser rangefinding and targetting systems to enable the M1 to fire on the move (The M60 had to come to a full stop before it could accurately fire), along with superior survibability due to its advanced armor.
The current model, the M1A2 and it's recovery variant, the M88A3 Hercules, will remain in the inventory for the forseeable future; all older M1A1s are being retrofitted to A2 status (same way with the older XM1s and IPM1s being converted to A1 statuse after the 1991 Gulf War) and the upgrades will continue until the tank cannot be further improved upon.
Trust me, the Abrams will remain the US main battle tank for the next 10-15 years before a newer tank can be tested.

Weinmann has been arrested for passing along Top Secret information related to National Security to the Israeli government.
In Weinmann’s case, one can bet the information he stole was of a highly classified nature, you see Weinmann was stationed on an American nuclear submarine, the USS Albuquerque. Despite this, Kate Wiltrout, of theVirginian-Pilot reports:
The Navy originally refused to release basic information about the Weinmann case – including the dates of his Article 32, or preliminary hearing – but reversed course after The Virginian-Pilot revealed Weinmann's confinement, and the secrecy with which it was being handled.[1]
Many people reading this will automatically assume that the Navy was keeping the case mum so as not to let the Israeli’s know they had caught Weinmann, but this isn’t the case, the Israeli’s probably knew before the Navy that Weinmann had been arrested, the Navy was keeping the case quiet in an effort to keep the American people in the dark, just as the United States government did with more than one hundred and fifty Israeli’s after they had been arrested for espionage just after 9-11, and the five Israeli’s that were arrested on 9-11 as a result of being witnessed by several people laughing while filming the impact of the airliners into the twin towers and clapping one another on the back in a congratulatory manner. The Navy buried Weimann’s case in the hope that the American people would never find out about him and what he did, just as the government did with Asher Karni, an Israeli Jew arrested at Denver International Airport on January 2, 2004 for having sold [past tense] more than sixty nuclear weapon detonators to Pakistan, a country populated by more than three hundred million Muslims, who generally don’t like the United States and where the name “Osama,” is the most popular name for a newborn male child. There are dozens of cases just like these; that have occurred in this country recently, the common denominator is that they all involve ethnic Jews. Besides, the fool wrote back, how much classified information would a Petty Officer have access to? I then quickly typed up another missive and sent it back to the miscreant, pointing out that there was a case involving an Army Specialist a few years ago in which the young man was arrested and tried for treason after he had passed along completely useless and antiquated information on the M1 Abrams battle tank. The information he passed along was information that could have been gathered on the Internet, this is not to mitigate what he did, he passed this information on to FBI agents posing as Al Qaeda operatives, thus he committed treason and I’d be the first to say he should be held responsible. His name is Ryan G. Anderson and he sits in a Military prison today with a life sentence – just where a traitor should be. Anderson was a Specialist, a glorified private really, who did not have access to anything spectacular – Weinmann was a Petty Officer stationed on a ballistic missile submarine that stole classified information that was directly related to American national security – do you see the difference?
When Anderson was arrested the entire media apparatus went immediately to work – before the end of the day his face had been splashed across every television screen in America a dozen times, every newspaper had his face on the front page the next day – in short – nobody was trying to cover up Anderson’s crime, not like they are with Weinmann. What’s the difference?
Another common denominator associated with people arrested for spying on behalf of Israel is that Israel is almost never mentioned by name; it is always referred to as a “foreign government.” The media does this so as to report whatever story may be in the works but at the same time to protect that little Middle Eastern provocateur from exposure – how can you convince Americans in the hundreds of millions that their hard earned tax dollars should be sent overseas to bolster the Zionist state if everyone knows that Israel is an enemy, not an ally. As an example of the media predilection, please note the following Associated Press blurb from an article entitled “Sailor Faces Spy Charges”:
Officials accuse Weinmann of passing classified information to a foreign government representative in Austria and again in Mexico.[2]
The reason the government attempted to cover up Weinmann’s arrest and the media attempts to suppress the fact that the “foreign government representative,” was an Israeli are the same – to prevent Americans from learning the extent of the Jewish nation’s intrigues against the United States and to keep the money rolling into Israel as if everything were A-okay.
