Boat Remote Radio Do you have to sail round the world to realise the bleedin' obvious?
"Round-the-world yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur has announced her retirement from competitive sailing so she can focus on environmental campaigning.
Dame Ellen will speak of her decision on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs.
She said she gained a new understanding of the issue during two months spent camping on the remote island of South Georgia in the southern Atlantic. "

I was just struck by a bit in the article: "You'd never do that on a boat. If you need some kitchen roll, you tear off a corner, not a whole square. But someone somewhere thought that a perforated line was what everyone needs."
Maybe I'm just tight fisted, but I prefer to not waste stuff too. I do like Ellen, but did she really have to sail round the world to realise that there's only so much of it?
Hypocrite!
Don't diss Ellen! OMG you are blocked she is my heroine *weeps*
I think you are misconstruing her intentions and words - everything she says is right. All the time lololol.
I'm a mixture of extremely canny and tight fisted but equally I have moments of extravagance. I'm not quite at the stage of using a T bag twice but give me time....
What I have seen in peoples bins and in skips outside their homes makes me sick to the stomach - the extravagant waste makes me ill. I could give you along list of my 'make do and mends' but i'd be here all morning
Tell you my bug bear - scented ironing water..who the F needs scented ironing water? All that packaging and environmental impact for SMELLY FOOKING IRON WATER? Some people need a punch between the eyes
When I was little Charity shops used to be full of antwacky smelly tat that no one wanted - now they look like an ordinary shop because the stuff was only in the 'new' shops a matter of months ago before being donated. Does anyone use cobblers anymore? OMG I can't shurrup...
EDIT- To be fair I would normally answer identical to ATS in these matters..all this sleb causes stuff is annoying, however as she has spent so long at sea were life is pared down to the bare essentials I really do think she sees waste and extravagance for what it is.I think she's eminently sensible and fair so it will be interesting to see what impact she can make on the issue - something needs doing and quick so I don't give a monkeys who gets people to feel individual responsibility as long as someone does...
Ships and boats, yachts and submarines have long been the subject of fantasies nursed by the young and the old. The waters of the seas and oceans hold many secrets which to the mind of the hobbyist were shared by the sea vessels that sailed on them. One yearns to be part of the mystery and adventure that surrounds sailing. A very select few can afford to own sea faring yachts and boats. The rest of us live our dreams by owning ship or boat models that are fashioned after the real ships and boats. Made to scale boats can be made to sail with the help of radio control equipment with which they are fitted. Such radio controlled boats can be operated remotely with the help of a multi channel radio transmitter. The radio transmitter is in the hands of the operator while there is a corresponding receiver on the boat. Signals are sent to the radio receiver on the boat by changing the position of the two joy sticks on the transmitter. The receiver on the boat is connected to two battery operated electric motors. Signals received from the radio transmitter which is handled by the operator are translated into instructions to run the motors as per directions. With a host of websites and companies now offering ship and boat models, they are able to offer exciting deals backed by comparative rate studies. Models can be handcrafted and made of wood or acrylic or a little of both. But fact remains that astute care is taken to deliver a finished and aesthetically produced boat model since it can be expected that one who would want to own a boat model for the love of owning a near original piece would settle for nothing less than a near perfect look alike. Radio controlled boats however have to be treated with more care since one cannot have water entering the motors on the boat. Although boats were considered a necessity for transportation until several years ago, today they are more a form of recreation and an indulgence towards a hobby. Granted that actually sailing on a boat is an experience an adventurous person would love above anything else, the technically oriented opt for the radio controlled variety of boat models to add to their collection of antique water-worthy artifacts.
