Cannon Smoke

Can anyone give me advice on a cannon gas fire please?
I have a balanced flue cannon gas fire -The Manor is the name of it.Recently had my room decorated and guy reckoned the room was so dark brownish because of the fire -even tho i,m an ex smoker the smoking would not have caused such heavy staining and i rarely smoked in the room.
Most engineers are wanting around £ 60 just to come out ,tell me what the problem is ,then i,ll need to pay for parts on top: a friend,s son is a working for his father in law as a gas engineer and told me that it is the chimney that is the problem and it would need "threading" -a big job and advised i,d be better just buying a new electic fire which he could get for me but when priced what he wanted and how much thy sell for well it would be half the price to buy elsewhere; the gas fire i have is glass fronted and a balanced flue -does this mean that infact the chimney "problem" isn,t the problem as i read a balanced flue fire doesn,t need a chimney?? Appreciate any advice and answers ,cheers
I wish I knew this one!
