what kind of car would you buy a Toyota Matrix or a Pontiac Vibe?

Which car should I purchase? Prius/Matrix/Scion?
Looking to buy a new car and I'm getting so overwhelmed and indecisive on what to get. I love the Prius because of the insane gas mileage but it's a little more than I wanted to spend. Plus, I'm a little nervous about the whole hybrid thing and worried that I'd spend more in the long run on maintenance and possible repairs.
So, the scion XD is more in my price range and not shabby on the mileage, the same goes for the matrix. What should I do?
Prius owner here.
As mentioned above, Prius has LOWER maintenance costs than normal cars.
Prius has just 22 moving parts in its single-gearset drivetrain, no gear-shifting, no clutch, no torque converter, no CVT belts. Tougher and more reliable than normal cars with regular transmissions with far more moving parts.
Prius battery has an 8-year / 100,000 mile warranty. If it fails before then (and that's virtually unheard of), the replacement cost is FREE.
Prius uses regenerative braking. It does not need a brake job until 100,000 miles. Try that in a regular car.
Prius has no starter, alternator or timing belt to go bad.
All in all, a great car.
Though if you want to buy a hybrid right now, I recommend the Ford Escape Hybrid. It uses a very similar drive system to the Prius with all of the same low-maintenance benefits, but the FEH qualifies for a whopping $3000 Federal Tax Credit, making its cost the same as a similarly-equipped regular Escape. The Prius unfortunately no longer qualifies for any tax rebates.
Hope this helps.
