The screw in my mixer tap (faucet) is stuck fast, need to service the tap?


I know how to change the washer once the tap is apart, but the grub screw (beneath the decorative cap) holding the tap top onto the block is stuck fast. I've soaked it in WD40 for a few hours but can't get it to turn. I'm in danger of stripping the cross head.

It's a standard monobloc mixer (not ceramic disc). The Hot side of the tap has stopped working completely, the flow reduced over the last few days to no flow at all today, and the tap only turns about 1/2 a turn, but the Cold side works perfectly making 4 full turns, cold water bounces off the sink. All the other hot taps in the house are quite normal, and the pipe isn't frozen.

I don't want the expense and trouble of replacing the whole block for what I believe is just a knackered washer and/or dirty mechanism.

If I heated the block (blowtorch?) would this help? If not, how do I remove this screw?

Once brass sticks, no amount of WD40 will shift it. Using a lot of force usually results in the top of the screw shearing off. Heating it with a blowtorch may free the screw sufficiently to remove it. The downside is that the chrome on the tap might bubble off.

It sounds like you have hard water problems. You'll probably find that the screw holding the washer has broken leaving the washer stuck in the tap. Cleaning everything out and greasing it may fix the problem for a short while, but you will need a new tap before long. The expensive ones with a ceramic disk instead of a washer are worth buying because they last a lot longer.

How to perform the fine adjustment of the loupes.

What is a dowel hole/pin??


Its commonly used in engineering the porblem is i dont really know what it is and i need to know, i think its similar to a grub screw without the threaded part??

a piece of round wood glued on both ends and inserted into two round holes.

    g'day guys you wont be disapointed with the sailright machine ,i bought one about 12 months ago now and have all manner of things for our tri,the only problem i encountered was the two grub screws on the balence wheel comming loose but watching the dvds provided helped out ,like you said excellent people do deal with enjoy your new toy and we look forward to seeing your creations on your posts keep up the excellent posts kind regards andy&tina from the tri ''tri-n-escape''

    Would it be possible to fit a wire band or something like that around the metal seat in order to give it extra strenght, if someone put weight on the bike it may pull the grub screws out of the axle,
