Inboard Starter

Help me fix a boat I inherited, no idea about how to check / V-6/in the boat? I'm familiar with a car motor!
I think its a V-6 inboard engine with a impellar lower unit and prop. Have no idea how to check out motor out of water. I know theres someway to hook up water hose so I can perhaps try and start it. I can replace the alternator or starter or hoses rotor, plugs.change oil etc. That is in a car or truck. Surely its not that different if the basics are the same. The boat has been in a barn mishandled horribly. My father passed away and my mom and uncle had to drive 500 miles to my dads cousins to whom borrowed the boat promising to fix and tune up th motor; however, when it was time to help they simply wouldn't bring it back to mom. Anyone that could lend a hand or merely give me a direction to go or a starting point for evaluation of motor worth fixing or I can repair with some good advice or guidance
ok first change the oil n filter rip out the old plugs 1 by 1 if u cannot remember fireing order or direction around a dist check the wire inside plug wires for corrosion n look under plug boots at cap for same pull distributor cap rotor assembly n replace along with plugs wires if need be next it prob is a carburated motor n if u r not sure of what u r doing u could f it up . chances r if nobody screwed with it it setting and adj will probably work out for now ok now to cool the eng if it has a prop and a car v6 eng it is what they call a inboard outboard setup anyway if it is like i say then u will need what they call mouse ears there r water pick up holes in the casting of the outdrive unit by prop where water is p/up n run thru block it looks like a heaphone set but made from plastic or ??? with a hose screw on 1 side of it slip this over the casting by prop making sure ear pieces sit over vents w hose attached turn the water on key up the ignition n prime it with starting fluid n crank away it is that simple u know how to get round a car eng u will be ok here
