Can a optical mouse LED blind you?
My mouse was acting funny ever since I cleaned it (probably got a bit of water in it), so I took it apart this morning. I should had unplug it from my laptop first, but being the idiot I am I end up staring into the bright red light for a few minutes as I expected the mouse's guts.
My left eye went blurry and I have bit of a migraine now. I know that optical mice use infrared red LED that shouldn't be a problem, should it? Is the LED powerful enough to damage my eyes?
If you can see out of your eye then you can't be blind.
I don't think the LED is powerful enough anyway. You may get blurry eye for a few moments but you can get that just by looking at a bright light bulb for a duration. You will be fine.
Your retina is a little tired that is all from the strong light. And it is not infra-red. Humans cannot see infra-red light. It is visible red which is higher in frequency and that is what dazzled you.
Your migrane is natural when exposed to bright light. Always protect your eyes first anyway!

Information on Infrared Systems
Infrared is a form of electromagnetic radiation which has longer wavelength than visible light. Sir William Herschel (1738-1822) discovered the infrared radiation and laid the foundation for future development of the technology. Infrared systems use the infrared wavelength of the light spectrum for functioning. The infrared light cannot penetrate through walls or any hard objects but can bounce back from the surface. Infrared technologies are used in many gadgets like remote controls, mobile phones, hearing aids and cameras.
The infrared system used by hearing aids has a transmitter device and a receiver. The transmitter captures the sound either by a microphone or an electrical connection. Such infrared systems can easily be installed. The infrared transmitter needs to be connected to the sound source and it transmits it in the form of invisible infrared light. The system should be placed in such a way that the infrared lights are not blocked by any object. Infrared technology also helps wireless communication between electronic devices. The devices need to be synchronized first, so that they can detect each other.
The infrared system in cameras captures the heat emitted by the objects to create an image. In this way it allows us to see things that are invisible to naked eyes. Regular use gadgets like hand dryers and remote controls also use the infrared technology. The hand dryers use the same heat sensing infrared system. The remote controls are made of electronic circuits which have LED-s which work in the infrared wavelength. The remote controls send out infrared light which is detected by the receiver. The LED helps to convert the electrical signal into invisible infrared light beam. Infrared technology is also used in space research. The activity of far off objects can be captured by using these infrared systems.
Infrared systems have many advantages. Some of those are low interference; low power consumption and signals contained within the enclosed space with negligible loss. The low power consumption comes in handy for laptops. However, the infrared systems also have certain disadvantages. Such systems are very much sensitive to the atmospheric conditions. Too much heat, rain or fog can hinder the transmission of infrared light beam. The distance between the transmitter and receiver is also decreases the power of such systems.
Thus we see that infrared devices have become a part of our daily lives. Most of the automated devices use this technology and further researches are going on all over the world for the improvement of the technology.

is there something different about these leds, or are the 850nm a lot weaker than 940nm infrared lights? my small security camera has about 4 of them and can light up an entire room. thanks.
