PEUGEOT GEARBOX / ENGINE ? what will fit?
I’m a South-African student with a big passion for old/vintage cars.
I traced down a 1957 Peugeot 403, ready for restoration.
One problem, NO ENGINE!
I can’t seem to trace an original engine for this car, so I’m thinking of putting in another engine. I don’t want to loose the gearbox, but WHAT ENGINE WILL FIT ON THE PEUGEOT 403 GEARBOX???
check some older chrysler stuff. i had an old jeep comanche that used peugeot transmissions. that was in the day when chrysler had their hands in the AMC stuff. most anything AMC should work. the AMC delorean actually had three different options on drivetrains, a peugeot setup, a volvo setup, and one other one

306 hdi flywheel on a 205 1.8 d'turbo?
i have found that the 306 hdi gearbox will fit on a 205 1.8 which i was well chuffed about so i assume this will be a massive improvement? so does the fly wheel but on the hdi fly wheel it has an extra set of teeth what are these? and on the 205 engine there is some kind of sensor and with the hdi fly wheel on it wont fit anymore could i just get rid of the sensor or would i have to stick with the 205 original fly? and one more thing about this 205 engine is there a way of uprating the fuel pump maybe to a 306 d'turbo bosch pump or any other brand or would the original be up to the job of all the extra fuel im wanting to pump out of it?
Hey,
With the gearboxes i just wanted to let you know that you will loose acceleration by a fair bit and the car will feel less powerfull as the gear ratios are all higher. However you will have a much higher top speed (about 20-25mph faster) i dont know if this is what you want or not?
I dont know about the sensor or the teeth but i would personally advise using the 1.8 flywheel if it will fit the gearbox as it will be much simpler and it is meant for the engine. Peugeot would have spent a fair amount of time working out the optimum flywheel weight for the engine and i dont know but would guess it will alter how the car drives a lot. It could even be weighted specially to balance the 1.8 crankshaft??? Dont know about the sensor.
As to fuel pumps you can get plenty enough fuel from the standard!! Is it a lucas/cav pump on it? If so i will let you know how to open it up if you dont already. Let me know if you want me to. Oh and is it a turbo or a straight 1.8?
James
