Polymer Charge
I bought an MP3 player from the United Kingdom, it uses a lithium polymer battery, should I be careful with it?
I've heard they can explode, I use my USB port to charge the MP3 player, it is a YP-U2.
The MP3 player has a USB adapter on the end of it, so I don't need a cable to charge it.
Someone said that the case on their MP3 player started expanding and that the battery and swollen and pushed the board and the cover off of the MP3 player.
I'm scared that it will explode while I'm using it or charging it in my laptop, if something goes wrong with lithium polymer batteries, they can start shooting flames.
What should I do?
rowlfe: The only charging method is with a USB port, the MP3 has a USB thing on the end of it so it plugs right into the computer to transfer files and charge.
So no, there are no exposed charging contacts.
OK, so the question is this: does the MP3 player have exposed charge contacts like a cell phone? Does it have a separate charger with a "socket" where it sits? If it charges ONLY off the USB, then you have absolutely NO problem whatsoever. The problem comes from exposed charging contacts. Lithium cells are VERY dangerous when short circuited. A battery is a potential energy source. Lithium batteries have the largest potential energy rating of ANY battery. Which means, when short circuited, delivers the MOST energy into the short making the most heat, sparks and potential fire, up to an including exploding the cell! MOST lithium cells used in various devices contain "safety" circuits which limit the charge current and also the discharge current so if shorted, safely discharge rather than explode or make an actual fire. To use an analogy, a regular alkaline battery is like a standard 1-1/2" firecracker but the lithium cell is like an M-80. You can survive the 1.5" cracker in your hand and it will hurt a bit, but with an M-80, you will lose a few fingers.
