How much does it cost to make a manual for a program?
I want to write a manual and I can not find anything online about how much is might cost. Please help asap!!!!!!!!!!!!
The cost to write a manual will depend on the complexity of the program. If the program is complex with a lot of options it will take longer and the manual will be bigger. If the program is fairly simple, the manual won't be very big and won't take as long. I've gotten everything from a single, one-sided page for a manual to 3 large books. Printing costs will vary accordingly as well. If you're being paid to write this manual, you may be able to do it on an hourly basis. This experience will give you more insight on how to charge for future writing.

I found myself editing a MODELLER script (in Python) recently, to accept files as command-line arguments rather than as hard-coded variables. Perhaps we all turn to Python eventually
Like you, I've also taken the “learn it as and when you need it” approach. You won't catch me reading programming manuals for fun.

I used to be a housekeeper in a luxury retirement home. Believe it or not, running a housekeeping department is quite complicated. If I were to do a project on the subject, here are some angles I would consider:
*Don't do your project on the training manual*
- controlling the inventory cost. State-of-the-art vacuums cost money, as do the chemicals they use.
- do you pay your workers by the hour, or by comission? pros and cons.
- maintaining customer convenience while keeping the standard of cleanliness.
there are lots of others you can do. my advice is, interview a few housekeeping supervisors and ask about their biggest challenges.

True. Maybe these two qualities make a book easy to get rid of:
1. Time-sensitive
2. Available free online
So the timeless “Art of UNIX programming” stays, but the 68020 machine programming manual goes. Raymond Chandler stays (still in copyright), but maybe Arthur Conan Doyle goes (collected works free at gutenberg.org).
For a while I found certain computer references easier offline, but that is now changing.
Haven't thought yet about what to do with my impressive collection of random bicycle components, unfinished/crashed radio control airplanes, weird tools, etc.
