Wind patterns on a global scale are driven by pressure gradients and thermal uplifting. Warm air rises in the equatorial region, moves polewards and sinks back down again. The circulating air masses are deflected sideways by the coriolis effect (spinning of Earth). On a regional scale winds are largely governed by topography and continentality.
Global warming is leading to changes in weather patterns but not so much in changing where the winds blow. There are some regional changes but they aren’t particularly significant and are more to do with oceanics, hence the greatest changes occur over the oceans – largely due to heat exchange between the oceanic and atmospheric environments.
Wherever there are temperature differences there will be winds whether these differences are between one part of the planet and another or between the oceans and the air or simply because we have warmer days and cooler nights. So unless the Sun stops shining or we lose our atmosphere we’re always going to have winds.
As we move away from a state of equilibrium (not that there ever was one just that we’re now further away from one) the overall effect will be one of increased winds when averaged globally, but not by so much as to make any appreciable difference.
Wind farms tend to be sited at altitudes where the local topography compresses the air masses and amplifies the wind or they’re out at sea where temperature differences generate pressure gradients and turbulence.
All of which, overly simplified explanation, means that wind farms will not end up as burned out metal forests.
