i have a 2002 gmc envoy that just blew the right front axle due to a dried up sealed bearing. Is this a defect


how do you maintain a sealed bearing?

Years ago replacement of front wheel bearings were rare. Design of present day bearings in my opinion are poor. The Envoy seems to have more than its fair share of failures in my shop. Its still a good idea to have your vehicle in for service regularly to prevent costly failures on the road. A good mechanic would have picked up on this long before your issue on the road.
You are unable to maintain this design of bearing other than to listen to noises and check periodically for looseness.

whats the differance between a sealed and a shielded bearing?


A shielded bearing has a circular metal shield fixed into the outer race on 1 or both sides, that extends close to, but not contacting, the inner race. It shields the balls and the cage from possible contaminants entering the races.
A sealed race has instead, a lipped seal that fully seals 1 or both sides of the race, fixed to the outer race as in a shielded bearing, but with a soft lip that runs ON the inner race. It presents the best protection against contaminants, and if the bearing is in a blind housing such that only one side might be contaminated, the single seal can be placed to the open side. Such an arrangement may allow oil lubrication, instead of grease, to be used.
If the bearing has 2 seals, it is invariable pre- lubricated with grease. There is no way to add lubricant.
Double- shielded bearings will also be pre- lubricated.

    your issue is not a wheel bearing it is the intermediate steering shaft, take it to the dealer for repair. It has been an issue in GM cars.

    For the price of all that cleaning stuff id rather just buy new ones each time-or i let mine sit in carb/brake cleaner assembled-blow um out and use a bicycle chain lube.i only ever usually just clean the ones out by the wheels.
