Speed boat racing
Calculus problem involving rate of change per time?
Two boats are racing with constant speed toward a finish
marker, boat A sailing from the south at 13 mph and
boat B approaching from the east. When equidistant from
the marker, the boats are 16 miles apart and the distance
between them is decreasing at the rate of 17 mph. Which
boat will win the race?
I know that Boat A wins but how do you obtain that answer using differentiation.
Let x be B's distance from the finish marker, y be A's distance, and z be the distance between the boats.
z^2=x^2+y^2
2z(dz/dt)=2x(dx/dt)+2y(dy/dt)
At the point when they are 16 miles apart (z=16 and x=y), the Pythagorean theorem says x=y=rad(128).
Also we know at that time dz/dt=-17 and dy/dt=-13.
Substitute and solve for dx/dt.
dx/dt=-11.0
Since x is moving more slowly and they are the same distance from the marker, A wins.
