Drafting between two boats?
Is it possible for two yaughts to 'draft' each other, as in use the forward boat to help the rear boat gain speed/expend less energy?
I'm asking this as the other day I was out sailing in my Snapdragon 27, along with a friend in his boat (a wider, Evasion 32). As we were coming into moor in a fairly calm and sheltered sea, I had the idea of slipping in behind the other boat in order to gain a little bit of ground, as the Evasion was a little faster. After moving in behind, about 3-4 metres, we gained 0.2 knots of speed and managed to keep up with the lead boat.
My first thought was this was like what racing cars do in order to gain speed, using the relatively 'clean' air to put less of a workload on the drafting car. However, on second thought we were both motoring and the propellors would surely generate very turbulent water?
Any ideas or explanations as to what have caused the 0.2 knot speed gain?
Yes drafting works in water just like air. Hydrodynamics the same. Porpoise & dolphins enjoy an easier ride of the bow wave of a vessel. Same deal.

Because of their long length, more then a hundred oarsmen are needed to propel them.
Snake Boat Race
Snake Boat Races of Kerala signify the excellent team spirit, integration and amity of the people of this backwater country. These are held during the festival of Onam, in the month of August/September. These snake boats are controlled by 4 helmsmen, 25 singers and about 100-125 oarsmen who row in unison to the fast rhythm of the vanchipattu (song of the boatman). Thousands of people gather along side the waterways to cheer the huge black crafts.
Boat races take place in different parts of Kerala. Aranmula, Payippad, Neerettupuram, Kumarakam, Karuvatta, Kavanattinkara, Kottayam, etc are a few prominent places.
