Why latin people in the USA celebrate the battle of Puebla? (5 de mayo)?
I am Mexican, and I don´t understand why the mexicans and latins in the USA celebrate that day.
In Mexico we remember that battle in the histoy books, but it´s not a holiday (i´m working rigth Know)
And if you study the history, we won the battle but lost the war.
In Mexico the national day is September 16.
I agree with you Francisco G. September 16th, is the most important celebration for us here in Mexico (Independence Day) equivalent to July 4th in United States.
More or less the same answer that you can read above, I received from a couple of friends I could contact in U.S.A. and both of them told me that they really do not know what is the exact historical event they are celebrating. It is just an excuse to drink tequila and make a party with their Latin friends.
It seems that Mexican immigrants that arrived over there many years ago, were the responsible to spread the date "5 de Mayo" as one of the greatest moments in Mexican history, which as you correctly say, it was just a won battle (May 5th, 1862 in Puebla) but a lost war against French army.

Is it true that the USA never lost a battle in the vietnam war?
Of course there were lost battles...all small.
Mishka your ignorance of the 30 years of war in Viet Nam are noted!
The Allied Forces of RVN, S. Korea, Thailand, USA, Austrailia and New Zealand had taken the lives of 3 full generations of N. Vietnamese men by mid 1967. This was the reason behind the TET 1968 Offensive. The hope was to create a popular uprising against RVN and it's Allies. That failed after news of the Hue City massacres created such a rush of volunteers on ARVN that they could not handle the men showing up to join. After 44 day's of battle all VC were out in the open and now known, NVA was routed in the limited areas they attacked. Both were in full retreat to Laos and Cambodia with their butts dragging when they were declared the winners. As they did not meet a single military objective and lost all battles Gen Giap was both confused, fired and full of hope at the same time.
Mishka, Helen, her sister, brother in law (Major ARVN 1955 - 1975) and all her friends here that lived thru most, if not all those 30 years did not come to the US because Allied troops were raping the women and burning the villages. The VC did as did NVA to a smaller degree. Fact is Helen was, but that was by the 2 communist men moved into her Saigon apt in the aftermath of April 1975. If you could read Vietnamese you would know their thoughts as the Vietnamese language papers in the US told them of Sen John Kerry and his BS. I have never seen folks so pissed off prior to that.
